UP: Dalit Man, Daughter Beaten For Drawing Water from Handpump at Ashram

The 13-year-old girl who was working in the fields had gone to drink water from a handpump installed outside the Dunda Ashram in Gunnor area when she was beaten up.

“Then I went to my father”.

According to reports, when the priest was confronted by the girl’s father over his actions, he attacked the father with a trident. The girl and her father were both thrashed for drawing water from a hand pump, as it was reserved just for the use of only upper caste. He slapped me. Then I went to my father. “Then she returned back”, he said.

The victim’s father claimed the entire Dalit community living in the village is not allowed to take water from the hand-pump. “Another person named Nathu started beating me with a stick”, described Charan.

Meanwhile, the police has registered a case under Section 323,324 and 3 (1) 10 of the SC/ST Act. Recently, Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, has also broke his silence over the issue and said, “If you have a problem, if you feel like attacking someone, attack me, not my Dalit brothers. But we need to take extra care and save society from such danger (of social strife)”, he had said”. In Gujarat, Dalits have launched massive protests against the state government after a Dalit family was flogged for skinning cattle in Una district.
