Up to 30 cars involved in pileup on I-70 near Richmond

Authorities said there have been reports of injuries, but they did not tell WISH.com how many were hurt, or how serious those injuries were. One of the pileups involved at least 30 vehicles along snowy Interstate 70 outside Richmond.

Among the highway troubles reported by police Tuesday were crashes involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 70 near Richmond, I-74 near the Indiana-Ohio state line and I-65 near Franklin. Some of the vehicles are overturned. First troopers on scene advised the roadway in both directions may be closed for hours.

As many as 20 to 30 vehicles could be involved, Indiana State Police and dispatchers said, including several jackknifed semi tractor-trailers.

Bowling said it could take crews hours to clean the roadway. There was heavy snowfall at the time, with near white-out conditions and some icy patches.

The Indiana State Police say west bound traffic is being diverted onto USA 35 to SR 1 in Indiana.

The Indiana State Police reported traffic incidents across the state Tuesday morning, many due to “very hazardous, ice and drifting snow”. Crashes on the east bound side are causing backups there as well.
