According to the CHP, a 40-year-old man was driving a silver Jeep SUV when an unknown vehicle drove alongside him and fired several rounds into the Jeep.

All lanes of westbound Interstate Highway 80 remain closed as of 8:45 a.m. Traffic is being diverted off at Appian Way.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

The Jeep’s driver allowed the vehicle to drift across the roadway and down a steep embankment to the right of the freeway. CHP officials said the crash started on the northbound lanes when the big rig lost control, flipped over a center divider and landed on several cars. The freeway is estimate to reopen around 10:30 a.m.

Investigators believe that the victim was a specific target of the suspect.

CHP Officer Alex Rubio said Lockhart admitted to investigators that he had been racing.

This is the latest in a series of shootings along this specific corridor of Interstate 80 that the CHP says may be connected to a feud between local gangs.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, and at least two were critically injured, KNBC reported.
