Update for Super Mario Marker to introduce checkpoint saves

Nintendo’s fall sensation Super Mario Maker will get a software update next month, and among the improvements will be a new level designed by two Facebook engineers. If Mario’s small when he hits the block, he gets the Mushroom.

Also coming in the update are new Course World categories, which will let Nintendo highlight specific levels created by both partners and creators outside of the company. With an increase in Super Mario Maker’s popularity, Nintendo has chose to bring new content to the game in order to keep it fresh and engaging.

Nintendo’s latest console, the Wii U, was a dud, selling about 10 million units its first three years.

Marianne is extremely enthusiastic about Super Mario Maker in the video and her level is called Super Shadow Puppeteer, created to mimic the feel of her studio’s game within Super Mario Maker itself.

Sales figures included strong performances from titles like Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer selling 2.42m, 1.88m, and 2.02m copies respectively. Players have already gone to great lengths to hack in a similar checkpoint system using elaborate arrangements of existing course elements, so we’re sure this will come as welcome news for many creators. But probably the biggest addition is the Official Maker section being added to Course World, which will feature “specially selected courses, including a few created by Nintendo”. Next week’s update goes live on November 4th in North America and Japan and on November 5th in Europe. Nintendo noted that the update will change how players receive power-ups based on the current state of Mario. As to what makes these courses so special might have something to do with special Mystery Mushroom transformations that will be featured.

Nintendo’s popular franchises, which include “Super Mario” and “Zelda”, “have the potential to be a billion-dollar business on mobile alone”, said Peter Warman, Newzoo’s co-founder and chief executive.
