Update on Rio Olympics

Charlotte Caslick of Australia runs with the ball to score a try under pressure of Luisa Tisolo of Fiji during a Women’s Pool A rugby match between Australia and Fiji on Day 1 of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at Deodoro Stadium on August 6, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Despite a late rally with two tries, a second try from McAlister and another from Woodman, the New Zealand comeback would fall short forcing the team to settle for silver.

“I think the women’s rugby sevens is a soft event whereas the men’s is a much more competitive event and gives a country like Fiji a chance at the Olympics, and that’s wonderful”, Charlesworth continued. She didn’t wait for the referee to brandish the yellow card, running off the field immediately to serve two minutes on the sideline.

‘We’ve only had about two hours sleep, ‘ she said.

Said New Zealand coach Sean Horan: “We always talked about it and it came down a couple of defining moments and opportunities, and Aussie took their opportunities”.

New Zealand dominated the second-half but struggled to break down a stubborn defence with Davies spearheading it as he flung himself at opponents. The team did an incredible job while I was out for those two long minutes.

THEY’VE sat back and watched on as the Australian Women’s side claimed Rugby Sevens gold on Tuesday morning (AEST), now central west guns John Porch and Pat McCutcheon are primed for a shot at their own.

After scoring the last try of the final, and falling to her knees, Woodman was comforted by teammates, who were also emotional.

“Devastating for Sonny, to lose him so early in the tournament with an Achilles problem and also Joe Webber”, said New Zealand’s veteran coach Gordon Tietjens.

Team captain Jen Kish prides herself on being tough – she takes and delivers hard hits for Canada’s rugby sevens team without hesitation – but after the final whistle here she fell to her knees in heaving, great sobs. “I just hope we have inspired girls all over the world to play rugby and hopefully we have won fans all over the world”. “It’s a huge honor no matter what”.

“For a team that has never played together, which is in effect what these 12 players are, we’ve done excellently today”.

A two-time Rugby World Cup victor with the All Blacks in 15s, Williams had little impact on the Olympics.

Landry regained her kicking form in the match, converting four of five kicks to finish with 18 of Canada’s 33 points.

Rugby sevens was accepted for at the Rio Olympics back in 2009, and Walsh said he believed the three days of entertainment from the 12 teams on show proved rugby was worth its place, albeit there was a large gap between the top and bottom sides.
