After reaching the tents, where the 6 Bihar advance party of about 40 soldiers was housed, the terrorists split up into three groups, investigators said.

September 21: Taking a firm stand with Islamabad over the Uri attack, India on Wednesday summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit and reminded him of the commitment made by the neighbouring nation in January 2004 to not allow its soil be used for terrorism against India, adding that the “persistent and growing violation” of this undertaking is a matter of serious concern. The report, however, stated that the Global Positioning System set was with the NTRO, a different organisation. Asserting that the latest terrorist attack in Uri only underlines that the infrastructure of terrorism in Pakistan remains active, Jaishankar demanded that Pakistan lives up to its public commitment to refrain from supporting and sponsoring terrorism against India.

There are reports that the NIA, which has registered a case into the incident, is examining the role of a “mole” in the attack who probably leaked out information about the security set-up at the base to the attackers, although these reports could not be independently verified. The total recoveries from the slain terrorists are four AK 47 rifles, four under-barrel grenade launchers, 39 grenades launchers, five hand-grenades, two radio sets, two GPSs, two map sheets, two matrix sheets, one mobile phone and a large number of food and medicine packets having Pakistani markings, according to Director General Military Operations (DGMO) Ranbir Singh.

An ICom-manufactured handset was also recovered from the terrorists.

This is the first investigation to be carried out by NIA in Kashmir of a militant attack. The agency also said it believed that the four terrorists spent at least a day in the mountains to observe the brigade headquarters complex before launching the attack.

“DNA samples of the slain terrorists are also being collected”, a source said.

The GPS set, Army sources said, was too badly damaged during the fighting for data to be recovered. Hours later, at the crack of dawn on Sunday, the camp was attacked by Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists.

The NIA is all set to question Lashkar-e-Toiba operative, Bahadur Ali, who was arrested in July. The NIA may show him the photographs of the Uri attackers to find out if they also trained with him in PoK.
