In addition to colorectal cancer, consumption of processed meat is also associated with pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer, according to IARC. The IARC analyzed many years of research on processed meats and cancer and has issued a very definitive statement that puts processed meats in the same risk category as smoking or asbestos.

The North American Meat Institute scoffed at the report, saying it ignored “numerous” studies showing no link between meat and cancer.

“If you are eating red meat on a daily basis or multiple times a day that’s probably where you at least need to think about ‘should I really cut down”, Samadder said.

After thoroughly reviewing the accumulated scientific literature, a working group of 22 experts from 10 countries convened by the IARC Monographs Programme found that the consumption of red meat causes cancer in humans. An example of a 50-gram (or 1.8 ounce) piece of meat might include one hot dog or two slices of bacon.

Experts say they’re not shocked to hear bacon is bad for your health.

The World Health Organization has a new warning about breakfast favorites like ham and sausage.

Vincent said she generally tells her patients to limit the intake of processed meats and eat more vegetables, nuts and other foods which are healthier for you.

Red meat does have nutritional value too and is a major source of iron, zinc and vitamin B12. He said governments and global regulatory agencies must balance the risks and benefits of eating red meat and processed meat “to provide the best possible dietary recommendations”.
