The pilot was taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to German television channel TVO.

A U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft assigned to the 480th Fighter Squadron from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, crashed August. 11, 2015, at approximately 9:38 a.m. near Engelmannreuth in the county of Bayreuth, Germany.

The reason for the crash remains unclear.

The fighter jet came down in a wooded area between Creussen and Engelmannsreuth in the Bayreuth district of Bavaria, the channel reported.

Before the crash, the pilot flew over an unpopulated area and released the fuel tanks before successfully ejecting from the F-16.

The cause of the accident is now under investigation.
