The warplanes entered the airspace of Syria from the Iraqi border, the spokesman said.

The Observatory said Russian jets had been conducting bombing in the area at the same time, that Islamic State fighters took control of army positions on Jebel Tharda after the air strike and that clashes between them had followed.

Syria’s army general command said in a statement that the air strike was “conclusive evidence” of USA support for Islamic State, noting that the strike was “dangerous and blatant aggression”.

In the wake of the airstrike, Russian Federation called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council.

Russian Federation convened an emergency UN Security Council Session on US-Led coalition airstrikes against the Syrian Army which Moscow fears will undermine the breakthrough ceasefire agreement that just went into effect earlier this week, Sputnik İnternational reported.

US -led coalition air strikes reportedly killed dozens of Syrian soldiers on Saturday, endangering a U.S.

A Russian Defence Ministry official said Syria has informed them that 62 of its soldiers were killed in the airstrike.

The air operation was carried out near Deir ez-Zour airport using the 2 F-16 and 2 A-10 aircraft belonging to coalition forces, according to a statement issued by the Russian Defense Ministry’s Facebook account.

“Sixty-two Syrian soldiers were killed and a hundred others were injured in these strikes”.

About 25 minutes into the strike, the Russians called the United States and said coalition forces were hitting Syrian troops, the U.S. official said.

Citing military sources inside the airport, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 30 members of the Syrian security forces were killed in the airstrikes.

Syria’s army has been fighting off a fierce offensive by the Daesh terror group on the Deir Ezzor military air base since previous year.

The airstrike hit a base in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour, which is surrounded by Islamic State militants.

Russian military officials meanwhile lashed out at both the United States and mainstream rebels in the strongest language yet over the ceasefire struck last week in Geneva, a last-ditch effort to stop the bloodshed in Syria.

Syria’s army general command said in a statement the attack was “conclusive evidence” of USA support for Islamic State, noting that the strike was “dangerous and blatant aggression”. Syrian activists said government forces killed five civilians in separate attacks on Saturday.

Rebels have also accused Russian Federation of using the ceasefire to give the Syrian army and allied Shi’ite militias a chance to regroup and deploy forces ready for their own offensives.

The ceasefire started on Monday and has so far lasted five days.

The official says the notification was sent through Russian Federation.

‘If the United States does not take steps needed to fulfil its obligations under the 9 September agreement, then all the responsibility for any collapse of the ceasefire in Syria would lie with the United States’.

Apart from the US and Russian involvement, Assad is supported by Iran and Arab Shi’ite militias, while Sunni rebels seeking to unseat him are backed by Turkey and Gulf Arab states.

Mr Putin said Washington apparently “has the desire to keep the capabilities to fight the lawful government of President Assad”, calling it a “very risky path”. However, Russia said it was still ready to extend the truce set to expire late Friday by 72 hours.
