US Astronauts fix stalled rail auto during spacewalk

In this photo provided by NASA-TV, American astronaut Scott Kelly returns to the International Space Station at the end of a spacewalk in which he and fellow American Timothy Kopra helped move a stalled rail vehicle back into place outside the space station, on Monday, Dec. 21, 2015.

The cause of the stall remains unclear but “experts believe it may be related to a stuck brake handle” according to ISS mission integration and operations manager Kenny Todd.

Today’s space station fix will mark the third career spacewalk for Kelly and the second for Kopra, who only just arrived at the International Space Station last week aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

The latest film returns to “a galaxy far, far away” some 30 years on from the action of 1983’s Return of the Jedi . It will open in Greece and India this week, and in China January 9.

Astronauts have been unable to fix the problem from inside the space station, so repairs had to be rushed to make sure the transporter would be working in time for the upcoming cargo ship arrival.

During the three-hour spacewalk, the two men will attempt to lift the brake on the mobile transporter rail auto, which carries the robotic arm from one location to another on the outside of the orbiting lab.

With their primary objective completed well ahead of schedule, the spacewalkers proceeded to route a series of cables that will support a docking port for future commercial crew capsules and retrieved tools for future use.

“This is a team effort”, Mr Kelly said.

Hopkins praised the astronauts for performing the spacewalk on such short notice.

The Progress MS/62P cargo ship had already launched from Kazakhstan when Kelly and Kopra swiftly planned and executed the spacewalk. Kelly, who is about nine months in to his historic year-long mission, has performed all three of his spacewalks this year.
