The U.S. women’s water polo team won its second straight gold in defeating Italy 12-5 in Friday’s final at the Rio Olympics. In fact, it wasn’t much of a competition at all. On offense, Kiley Neushul led the way for the Americans with three goals on four shots as the USA rolled up 12 goals on Italy, says the Olympic
web site.

At least Italy put up a fight, for a while.

The performance by the goalies helped the US pull away from Italy.

Friday, eight players total scored for the USA, including the first five goals coming from different players: Mathewson, Kiley Neushul, Craig, Makenzie Fischer and Rachel Fattal.

Russian Federation is bringing home its first Olympic women’s water polo medal since 2000.

The win is the second gold for head coach Adam Krikorian, who left Rio prior to the opening ceremonies after the sudden death of his brother Blake.

Germany beats Sweden in women’s soccer • Dzsenifer Marozsan scored early in the second half and Germany went on to give coach Silvia Neid a 2-1 victory over Sweden in her final match and the nation’s first Olympic gold in women’s soccer.

The U.S. women were the overwhelming favorites all along – and they played like it.

Italy had been the last team to defeat the Americans, when it did so last season at the world championships in group play.

How dominant is Team USA? The U.S. has won 22 games in a row since then, including the gold medal victory on Friday.

“That’s what we’re about”, Steffens said, “is going out there, having fun and playing the best water polo we can”.

“It’s not about me and it’s about the team, and that has actually helped me and that’s made it actually fairly easy”, he said, “and that doesn’t take away from the love I have for my family or my brother”.

Knox scored four goals over the course of six games, each one coming in a different game.

The American women’s 4×100 relay team will try to capitalize on its reprieve following a collision on a handoff at the Olympic track stadium, and Germany and Sweden meet in the first all-European Olympic women’s soccer final. Bolt led the Jamaicans to the top of the podium in the event in Beijing and again in London, where the team set the world and Olympic records. “We love and respect him greatly”.
