US, Britain Warn Of Possible Threat To Westerners In Beijing On Christmas
The US Embassy issued a notice on its website on Thursday, warning people about possible threats against westerners in this area on or around Christmas Day.

The US embassy in Beijing has issued similar guidance to its citizens.
The warnings made mention of the upscale Beijing neighborhood of Sanlitun but were otherwise nonspecific. “British citizens are urged to exercise heightened vigilance”.
The district is home to a popular open-plan mall that boasts high-end brands like Mango, Reiss, and Lacoste, and some of Beijing’s best Western dining.
The American and British warnings, which were worded identically, singled out the Sanlitun neighbourhood in eastern Beijing, but they gave no details about the potential threat. At night, it becomes a popular nightlife district for locals and foreigners alike. Police have issued a yellow security alert during the Christmas period, but this is a relatively normal procedure around holidays and does not represent a particularly high threat level.
A stampede during New Year celebrations last year had left 36 people dead and 49 others injured – 13 of them seriously – at a waterfront area in Shanghai.
Sanlitun has seen violence against westerners previously, with an incident in August where a sword-wielding man attacked a French man and a Chinese woman.

The city’s police confirmed a yellow alert was in place, added: “Beijing police are planning ahead and taking many measures… to ensure public order”.
