US Coast Guard gives special 226th birthday message

Oddo said he’s issuing a proclamation declaring Thursday as “Staten Island Coast Guard Appreciation Day”. A Coast Guard crew sailed the ship to NY 70 years ago.

President John F. Kennedy remarked aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Training Barque “Eagle”, Aug. 15, 1962: “This is a very ancient service in our country’s history”.

The Coast Guard also conducted more than 17,000 search and rescue missions in 2014, saving more than 3,000 lives.

President Herbert Hoover suggested December 27, 1929: “A further proposal … is the definite expansion of the Coast Guard … in the matter of border patrol”.

Today we celebrate the Coast Guard’s 226th birthday and their continued dedication to duty and selfless service of protecting, defending and saving Americans every day.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina were alerted at 8:51 a.m. that a 46-year-old man was experiencing chest pains aboard the 57-foot charter fishing vessel Tuna Trappe about 38 miles southeast of Oregon Inlet.
