US, Cuba agree to open commercial air links
Cuba is willing to keep improving relations with the United States even though Washington has failed to meet its key demands for normalization, Cuban president Raul Castro said on Friday, a day after the anniversary of detente.

US and Cuban officials reached an agreement this week to allow for regularly scheduled air travel between the two nations.
The deal was achieved in Washington, after three days of negotiations between the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for transportation affairs, Thomas Engle, on the US side and Ambassador Yuri Gala Lopez from Cuba.
The cheerful invitation from the Engage Cuba Coalition-a new lobby meant to mobilize support for normal ties between Washington and Havana- declared, “The weather may be freezing, but U.S.-Cuban relations are thawing”.
Since then, the two countries have reopened embassies in each other’s capitals and the US has gradually eased sanctions on the island.
“Today’s announcement is great news for our customers as it brings us one step closer to connecting the USA and Cuba with scheduled air service”, said American Airlines chairman and CEO Doug Parker., in a statement. Now only authorized charter flights are allowed to fly between the U.S. and Cuba. That could boost business and tourism on the island.
However, under current regulations, those trips must be booked on charter flights and are hard for travelers to arrange online.
With a limited number of flights to Havana, there is likely to be intense competition to secure convenient slots among the major U.S. airlines. Those traveling from Boston most commonly take a connecting flight to Cuba from John F. Kennedy International Airport in NY, according to travel website TripAdvisor.
Cuba maintains “full readiness to continue working toward building a relationship with the U.S.”, Castro said.
The United States airlines, who are interested, must negotiate with the Cuban authorities to incorporate the routes.
The U.S Department of Transportation his historically allowed airlines to submit bids for proposed service to countries where flight rights are restricted. The move is seen as a significant step in normalizing relations between the two former Cold War enemies.
