US Democratic lawmaker backs Iran nuclear deal

Graham, a former lawyer, engaged his somewhat prosecutorial style with Carter, asking whether Iran’s supreme leader controls the military and whether his religious views “compel him over time to destroy Israel and attack America?”

Instead, the resulting agreement is precisely in accordance with U.S. intentions: no relief will be granted to Iran until after it has undertaken – and the worldwide Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has verified – its various nuclear commitments that will, in aggregate, create the breakout timeline and verification requirements to detect cheating.

Hekmati is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Initially, he was sentenced to death. His family denies the charge.

Those sanctions, along with ones put in place by the United Nations and EU, came in response to allegations that Iran was using its nuclear technology to pursue nuclear weapons.

In short, every poll that finds support for the Iran agreement includes a question that explains why people should support it while casting no doubts.

The celebrities go on to describe the deal as “strong” and the best way to keep Iran from a bomb and to avoid war. We don’t get that. “Now I want to hear somebody tell me how they’re going to do that without this agreement“, he said.

Rejecting the deal “would threaten not just our credibility on the global stage, but also our national security and that of our allies”, Price said in a statement.

DEMPSEY: Secondly, I think that a negotiated settlement provides a more durable near – and reduces near-term risk, which buys time to work with regional partners.

Cotton said reports by media, including the latest by the Associated Press, indicate that Iran will be allowed to collect its own samples and submit those samples to the IAEA, “much like an NFL player taking his own urine sample and sending it to Roger Goodell for a drug test. Can you confirm or deny that that is the content of those side deals?”

In a conference call with political allies Thursday evening, Obama said critics of the deal are spending $20 million on advertising as members of Congress return to their home districts.

The deals are indeed confidential, and that gets to the heart of what the IAEA is.

Wednesday’s hearing was the third in a week, in which senior Obama administration officials have testified before congressional committees and tried to beat back Republican criticism of the Iran agreement. But Secretary Carter also said Iran was on par with the self-proclaimed Islamic State, or ISIL.

But with sceptical Republicans struggling to persuade enough Democrats to join them in overriding a presidential veto, Kerry painted a bleak picture of the alternative options during four hours of heated testimony before the House foreign affairs committee on Tuesday.

US Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter assured lawmakers Wednesday that a deal on Iran’s nuclear programme between Tehran and world powers would not limit the Washington’s ability to respond with military force if needed.

Supporters and opponents are urging members to decide and announce their positions, in the hopes that those who have gone public will inspire others to follow.
