“To ensure balance, we hope more investors from Sri Lanka will come forward to invest in Malaysia”.
“These 50 Sri Lankan nationals were mostly arrested for overstaying in Malaysia or probably for committing other offences under the Immigration Act”, he told the Malaysian media here.
During his working visit today, apart from visiting the Asia Pacific Institute for Information Technology (APIIT) he also attended a Malay Islamic World (DMDI) gathering held at a hotel in Colombo.
To a question on the influx of Sri Lankan tourists to Malaysia, Ahmad Zahid said of late the number had decreased.
He said Sri Lanka has invited Malaysia to join the Bay of Bengal Economic Caucus.
He said, at present, approximately 1,200 Sri Lankan students were pursuing their studies in Malaysia.
The text of his speech was read out by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.
The Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia is in Sri Lanka on a two-day official visit.
Ahmad Zahid said Sri Lanka had also sought Malaysia’s advice to modernise the issuance of high quality identity card for their citizens, as being practiced in Malaysia.
On cooperation in tackling terrorism, Ahmad Zahid said Malaysia had offered Sri Lanka to send its officials from enforcement agencies for training in Malaysia.
