Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, meanwhile, made a series of televised appearances in which he disclosed dramatic details of his survival on the night of a failed coup and raised the specter of reintroducing the death penalty to punish conspirators.
Mr Yildirim said yesterday that the death penalty issue needs to be debated in Parliament.
Major roads and bridges were claimed by soldiers in the two main cities. Members of the armed forces took control of Turkish state TV, declaring martial law. Almost 300 people lost their lives in a night of chaos and confusion. He has locked up his rivals and seized control of an opposition newspaper.
Also, while attending a funeral in Istanbul following the attempted coup, Erdogan pledged to eradicate the cancer that is spreading inside the public facilities. “We need to respect, have Turkey respect, democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms”.
“We call for the full observance of Turkey’s constitutional order, and we, as the European Union, stress the importance for the rule of law prevailing in the country”, Federica Mogherini, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, said at a news conference in Brussels.
“We will certainly support bringing perpetrators of the coup to justice but we also caution against a reach that goes well beyond that”, said Kerry.
One Twitter user said: “Terrible fumes here”.
Gulen has strongly denied any involvement in Friday’s coup attempt.
“We would be disappointed if our (American) friends told us to present proof even though members of the assassin organisation are trying to destroy an elected government under the directions of that person”, Yildirim said, referring to Gulen and his supporters in Turkey and overseas.
Turkey’s Western allies have expressed solidarity with the government over the coup attempt but also alarm at the scale and swiftness of the response, urging the country to adhere to democratic values.
