US Fish and Wildlife Service Develops App That Could Protect Endangered Species

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is partnering with a company called FishBrain to back an app that may just help save endangered species of fish.

Such a measure is more than welcomed since because of climate change almost all the living species on Earth are affected.

Once the app is installed, users will be able to identify endangered or at risk species and upon seeing one, report the sighting. They can log sightings of up to 50 of these species as they fish in an effort that could help researchers and conservationists learn where the animals live, the type of habitat that they need and even the reason why their population is declining.

When proposals emerged in Congress to remove wolves from endangered species protection altogether, the Humane Society of the United States asked the federal government to classify wolves everywhere as threatened. “Anglers are extremely important to protecting and maintaining healthy aquatic habitats”. “This is a unique opportunity to synthesize recreational anglers’ information and knowledge in local waterways and expand our understanding of various species.” said Gary Frazer, Assistant Director of the Service’s Ecological Services Program.

He also spoke about the fact that conservation can only be achieved through education and engagement, this is why a partnership with Fish Brain is seen as such a positive thing. The federally protected animals across the country include shortnose sturgeons, whooping cranes, Kemp’s ridley sea turtles and Columbia white-tailed deer.

The app will also be instrumental in tracking the endangered species in the wild.

The final list will include not only aquatic animals, but also birds, amphibians, reptiles and large mammals.

Additionally, the new fishing app will be able to help out anglers anxious by environmental factors including unruly weather and poor water quality. If you want to protect endangered species closer to home, there is a new app for that. Through cooperation with other state agencies, they are aiming to conserve the threaten species by improving creatures’ habitat and removing their threats.

Fishbrain will also analyze data already recorded by other anglers in order to tell you how to catch more fish.

As ZME Science reported, the app is a free-to-use tracker designed towards avid outdoorsmen and nature enthusiasts.
