US gold medalist King explains Efimova snub, stays resolute in doping stance
On Sunday night, USA’s Lilly King – the 19-year-old upstart darling on the swimming team – was caught on camera shaking a finger at Yulia Efimova, the Russian-born swimmer who has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs…

American swimmer Lilly King, who defeated Efimova to win gold Monday, had earlier vented frustration that the Russian swimmer was allowed to compete given her two previous bans for doping charges. You know I think [King] is right. Asked if USA sprinter Justin Gatlin should be on the team after two drug suspensions, she didn’t back off. Things were just as icy afterward, as Efimova stood alone with her silver medal with no congratulations from King or her teammate, bronze medalist Katie Meili.
“Do I think people who are caught for doping offences should be on the team?” But it was not a happy moment, as she was booed both before and after the competition.
“Matches in the Olympic Village increased by 129 per cent over the weekend, and the company expects that trend to continue, she said”. “The second time was not my mistake”.
King, of IN, beat a late Efimova charge to win IN an Olympic record of 1min 04.93sec, with the Russian second IN 1:05.50.
“If I had been in Yulia’s position, I would not have wanted to be congratulated by someone who was not speaking highly of me”.
Russian swimming chief Vladimir Salnikov told Reuters on Tuesday the atmosphere surrounding his team reminded him of the Cold War.
“I’m actually glad I made a statement, and I ended up coming out on top in the race”.
“For me it is very hard to swim”.
“It’s incredible, winning the gold medal and knowing I did it clean”, she told the media “After standing up for what I believe is right, I felt I had to perform even better”.
It’s Olympic season and the Rio Games are in full swimg. And like King, Murphy shared his moment with a teammate: bronze victor David Plummer. “No, they shouldn’t”, King said when asked about Gatlin on Monday after winning gold in the 100-meter breaststroke. Le Clos beat Phelps in the 200 fly in the 2012 London Olympics.

King’s victory highlighted a six-medal night for the Americans, who also extended their domination in the men’s 100 backstroke with Ryan Murphy’s victory.
