US men’s basketball team gets tested, beats Australia at Olympics

This night that looked for a while to be nothing more than a novelty – the New York Knicks star passing LeBron James as the all-time American leading scorer in American Olympics history en route to an expected win – eventually became one of Anthony’s most memorable performances in his decorated worldwide career.

Murphy set an Olympic record with a time of 51.97 seconds to capture the sixth straight gold for Team USA Swimming in the event.

Carmelo Anthony didn’t just become Team USA’s all-time leading scorer in the Olympics on Wednesday at Youth Arena.

It isn’t. Australia is a great basketball team, and while their team excursions and off-court holidays might play a small part in the spark, the main reason they’ve been so successful thus far is because they play off each other so well. “My teammates was making sure I was aware of the situation, but tonight was one of those nights where I wanted to let the game come to me and take the shots that was given to me, take the open shots and kind of play basketball”.

“I think it’s the Australian culture”, said Joe Ingles, whose day job is playing for the Utah Jazz.

“I mean Australia has probably played the best of anybody in the Olympics”. Meanwhile, the US appeared mostly stagnant, disjointed, and frustrated as they routinely settled for contested jump shots early in the shot clock after only one or two passes.

The Australians, with five National Basketball Association players (four of whom have won National Basketball Association titles), were led by San Antonio Spurs point guard Patty Mills (30 points, including six three-pointers) and Milwaukee Bucks point guard Matthew Dellavedova (11 points and 11 assists). It’s all unfamiliarity first (both in terms of Team USA’s chemistry, and in scouting from the coaching staff), excuses (“we didn’t have Kobe!”) later. “One is the streak is over”.

Now they’ve finally had a game that wasn’t. The point guard who plays professionally for the San Antonio Spurs scored 30.

U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski was full of praise for the Australians, describing them as genuine gold medal contenders. Afterward, nearly everyone connected to the US program tried to take a positive out of it, saying a close game will prove good for the team as it chases the gold. And if they beat you, they beat you.

It was good for Australia, too, though the Boomers had to wonder if anyone can beat the US after just falling short in their best effort.

“Not tonight”, he said.

The United States had a great night at the pool during Monday night’s swimming competitions at the Summer Games in Rio De Janeiro.
