“Pearl Harbor was, I don’t know”, says Reverend Clark. Veteran Chuck Lishman said the day still stands out in his mind.

There was a moment of silence along with a reading of the names of those killed on the U.S.S. Arizona battleship from Kansas.

On Monday, several ceremonies in West Virginia marked National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. “They put us on a ship and toured all the way around Pearl Harbor, where all the ships were tied”.

The USS Arizona Memorial site was closed May 27 for nine days after a dock at the memorial that sits atop the sunken ship was damaged in an accident.

For those who served in World War II remembering the attacks on Pearl Harbor is a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice that so many men and women have given to protect this country.

Doyle also recalls the gunners who, while under withering attack, took to their anti-aircraft weapons and tried to take out as many Japanese pilots as they could.

A memorial service was held at the National World War II Memorial in Washington to honour the dead in the Japanese bombing on Pearl Harbour 74 years ago.

Harris, who leads the U.S. Pacific Command, says for 74 years, the nation has remembered Pearl Harbor.

“As you can imagine, growing up I listened to my dad’s stories of duty, honor and courage”, he said. “When I first realized these planes were diving, they had their canopies open”.

“I was in Pearl Harbor in 1944-1945 and saw the devastation that had not been cleaned up”, said Sheridan Marquardt, retired Navy. “So as long as we’re able to, we’re going to get the word out”, Jones Barry said. But he comes to the annual ceremony because the attack was a “big thing in my life”.
