US Open 2016: Andy Murray thrashes Grigor Dimitrov to reach quarter-finals

“Oh wow, it is really exciting, this is where it all started so it is always so magical out here for me but 308 sounds pretty good”, Serena said after moving a step closer to a record seventh US Open title.

“It was too exciting on the court, but I tried to stay calm”, Nishikori said after the epic win in his first match at Arthur Ashe Stadium since the final here in 2014.

Del Potro is playing just his second Grand Slam event since the 2014 Australian Open.

A double fault in the fourth game set up Murray’s first break, and in the sixth game Nishikori lost serve again after two consecutive misses at deuce.

“I’m feeling very good”.

But, unlike the Serbia clash, Andy Murray would not have to contend with a change of surface and, injury permitting, seems nearly certain to play.

He next faces the victor of Wednesday night’s quarterfinal between 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro and No. 3 seed Stan Wawrinka. “There are people saying that I could be there earlier, but right now I feel great and I feel it’s the right time for having the results like this”.

But Nishikori uttlerly dominated the fourth set, winning five games in a row to turn 1-1 into 6-1 and set the match up for a decider.

“Definitely. My concentration went off”, Nishikori said.

” This is the semi-final of the Davis Cup, we are leaving no stone unturned in our preparations and I know that our team will give their best effort, and fight for every point in this tie”. As Murray broke back in the following game Dimitrov took a wild kick at a ball in frustration and barely made contact.

Murray added: “Grigor played his best, but I didn’t really give him a chance to get into the match”.

The 2012 champion at Flushing Meadows will face No. 6 Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals – the other matchup on their side of the draw is No. 3 Stan Wawrinka vs 2009 U.S. Open title victor Juan Martin del Potro. “I only did it once – I think it was luck”.

This time, Nishikori came through, helped by a series of effective drop shots and an ability to keep his nerve over the closing three games.

Novak Djokovic reached his 10th successive US Open semi-final on Tuesday when French opponent Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retired through injury.

World number two Andy Murray was very happy with his performance after he eased into the US Open quarter-finals on Monday. He’s made his only slam final here.

Karolina Pliskova dominated with her serve to roll past 18-year-old Ana Konjuh and into the U.S. Open semifinals.

The second-ranked Murray could face resurgent Juan Martin del Potro in the best-of-five series at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland, from September 16-18.

Murray can be at his most stubborn when flustered but he dug in with a decisive break, before serving out to lead two sets to one.
