US Open 2016: Angelique Kerber wins title

The German’s run to the showpiece in the Big Apple means she will be the world number one when the rankings are reviewed next week and she can crown her ascent with a second Grand Slam title of the year.

This should be an epic match, with second ranked Angelique Kerber, 28, looking to win the final Grand Slam event of 2016 at the U.S. Open, as she goes up against 10th ranked Karolina Pliskova, 24. The Czech, after her win over Serena Williams in the semi-final, didn’t get distracted by her win but preferred to keep her mind about her final against Angelique Kerber. She was also a finalist at Wimbledon and won a silver medal at the Olympics in Rio in August. The two will meet in the finals on Saturday to decide this year’s US Open champion.

The win was Kerber’s second major victory of the season-and her career-after she kicked off 2016 by winning the Australian Open title. Kerber last won on the hard courts at Stanford in 2015, but Pliskova actually owns the more recent win, and it came on a big stage.

As Pliskova blazed her final forehand long after two hours and eight minutes, Kerber fell on her back, cupped her hands over her mouth and held her arms aloft.

They seemed to be on course for a third meeting in the final at Flushing Meadows, but the 10th-seeded Pliskova eliminated Williams in the semifinals, after beating her sister Venus in the fourth round.

The German had a celebratory swim in Melbourne’s Yarra River after her breakthrough slam but has nothing planned should she add the US Open crown. On one that went 15 shots, Pliskova tried a drop shot that Kerber sprinted to reach before scooping a down-the-line forehand victor to a corner.

“I think I will go out there trying to get my next chance against her and take the revenge”.
