US Open 2016: Murray determined to make every chance count

Broady has climbed to 83rd in the world and 164 spots above Robson, who is bidding to win her first grand slam match since reaching the third round at Flushing Meadows in 2013.

Serena Williams admits she feels under-cooked ahead of the start of the US Open on Monday.

Graf, who shares the Open-era grand-slam record of 22 wins with Williams, told Kerber she was on the right track and to go easier on herself.

The American, however, could break Graf’s record of 186 consecutive weeks on top of the world rankings.

“I hope I’m still playing like this when I’m 38 years old, but it’s pretty unlikely, ” Murray said with a smile.

“I think today I can start the forehand, I think my normal forehand, but it still needs time to feel that I am more confident on my wrist”.

“I definitely had some sleepless nights”.

“Sometimes you have to hit the wall to get better”, he said.

Although she has always had enormous talent, Keys believes she has finally found the right mindset to be a contender for a grand slam title. Slowed by a bothersome right shoulder, Williams lost in the third round of singles and first round of doubles at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics — she was a 2012 gold medalist in both events — and then pulled out of a hard-court tuneup event in Ohio.

She then withdrew from her WTA title defence in Cincinnati, still struggling with painful shoulder inflammation.

If Williams isn’t at full strength, Kerber is just one of the players poised to pounce. I played against Del Potro, who unfortunately was absent from the tour for the wrist injury himself. In Federer’s absence, Stan Wawrinka, beaten Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic, as well as 2014 US Open finalist Kei Nishikori and victor Cilic, loom as the other likely challengers.

Kerber, 28, boasts a title at Stuttgart, an Olympic silver medal and finals appearances at Brisbane in January and this month in Cincinnati – where she missed her first chance to supplant Williams atop the rankings after a 6-3, 6-1 defeat by Karolina Pliskova.

At 29, Murray knows that his time at the top is limited and is setting his sights on winning more grand slam titles, sooner rather than later.

“I’ve gotten better”, he said.

Venus Williams, who is playing her last major, is drawn in Serena’s half and will have to get past 4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarter-finals to set up a meeting with her sister.

“Because Serena is one of the best players and athletes in the world”, she added.

The tennis star, who also missed Serbia’s Davis Cup tie against Britain in July, will this week battle to retain his US Open title in NY.

The schedule for day 1 of the US Open on Monday will be updated as and when they are announced. “I’ve played so many British people over the last few weeks in the Challengers that as soon as I saw Heather and Naomi had drawn qualifiers, I just had that feeling that I was going to play one of them”. I don’t see this as any more of an opportunity than any of the other slams, to be honest’.
