The 24-year-old Czech lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to the new world number one but she came tantalisingly close to a maiden Grand Slam win when she led 3-1 with a break in the decider. The German Kerber has won four of seven but Pliskova won their most recent meeting last month in Cincinnati losing just four games.
The German who had “been around a really long time”, as Williams put it in admiring Kerber after their Australian Open final in January, Kerber began the year at No. 10, a typical spot as she had dwelled on the top page for much of five years.
Pliskova was the woman who bested Williams, and she herself beat Kerber in the finals at Cincinnati prior to the US Open, so she still has to have plenty of confidence.
Angelique Kerber earned the No. 1 ranking before she stepped on court, then she went out there and looked like a top-ranked player.
Kerber was playing the woman who earned her the world number one ranking.
Kerber is seeded No. 2, but already is assured of overtaking Serena Williams at No. 1 in the rankings on Monday, regardless of the outcome of the final. Kerber won this year’s Australian Open and was the runner-up at Wimbledon. Graf went on to win the Grand Slam that year – all four majors – and an Olympic gold medal.
“Everything starts here in 2011 and now I’m here with the grand slam trophy”, she said in her post-match interview. “It’s never easy to beat her”. “I am excited to be in the final and to beat Serena as she is such a great champion”, she said. An ace took the Czech to set point and a missed forehand by Kerber completed the job. So, I mean, it’s a big result for me.
“Here I have one day off tomorrow, so I can really prepare for the final against Pliskova”.
The German had a celebratory swim in Melbourne’s Yarra River after her breakthrough slam but had nothing planned after taking the US Open crown. We all know she’s tough to play and she’s putting so many balls back.
The 28-year-old German added the United States crown to the Australian Open title she won earlier this year by coming through an engrossing match that lasted more than three hours. “I was thinking, ‘OK, now I can even lose in the first or second round of the U.S. Open, ‘ but I was able to take the game from Cincinnati here, which is never easy after you win a tournament, to play the same game in other tournaments”.
“I hope I didn’t stop yet, that there is still one more step to go”. If someone would tell me I’m going to play finals in this tournament two weeks ago, I would take it. I know what to change.

“But I will just do anything to win the title here”.
