US Open: Dominant Novak Djokovic ends Kyle Edmund’s excellent run

It is the first time since 1947 that three French men have reached the quarterfinals of one Grand Slam.

“I just enjoyed the experience”, he said.

“It feels great to play a match”, Djokovic said in an on-court interview. “It’s all good; to be honest, I take it day by day”.

All the questions Djokovic faced coming into the tournament, into this match – the “personal” problems that contributed to his early Wimbledon exit; his first-round defeat in Rio; withdrawing from Cincinnati; the wrist and arm injuries he struggled with in his unconvincing first-round win against Jerzy Janowicz; the lack of time on court here – were all being emphatically answered.

“Now a fourth round, after a weird couple of rounds”.

“I learned a lot from tonight”, Edmund said.

“I thought I came out, really, from the blocks very good, playing with a high intensity”.

He broke in the third game, and then when Edmund got a break point to level immediately he sent down an unplayable wide serve.

The 29-year-old Serb needed treatment during the third set as the trouble he had with his upper arm in the first round flared up again.

Murray has been at the receiving end at numerous Grand Slam finals in the last five years against his old friend, but the Briton certainly has an advantage this year over Novak at Flushing Meadows as the latter’s form has been marred with fitness issues of late.

Djokovic dictated the rallies and played unusually quickly between points, seizing on the initial nerves of his opponent. He had a second-round walkover and claimed a third-round win when his opponent, Mikhail Youzhny, retired with Djokovic up 4-2 in the first.

All of which leads me to give a set at the most to Tsonga tonight and the 3-1 to Djokovic at [3.8] seems the best wager in this late night clash.

“But I’m trying to not put pressure on myself, because I know I have to win a few more matches to reach the No 1”.

Konta has since reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open and risen to 14th in the world, but Sevastova’s journey to this point has been an unusual one.

The other quarter-final in the bottom half of the draw sees German second seed Angelique Kerber face Roberta Vinci, the Italian seventh seed.
