US Open: I fear playing Venus, says Serena Williams

Serena, whose firstSerena Slam“, in 2002-03, came by beating Venus in four consecutive Slam finals, has won 25 US Open matches in a row since a 2011 final loss to Australian Samantha Stosur.

For the 27th time, Serena Williams is looking forward to remain consistent with her winning run against her sister, since being known for holding the record of most wins during all their previous matches. “I have to be really ready”. “A Williams will be in the semis at least so that’s good”. But it did not take Serena long to assert her authority and now, all these years later, Serena leads their rivalry 15-11 and has lost only once to Venus since 2009.

The Estonian served well, as did Serena, but wracked up 19 unforced errors to six for her rival, including six double-faults, with majority at unlucky points in the match. Playing off the sister-sister narrative, Venus said the dream has always been for the Williams siblings to play one another on the professional stage – it guarantees family success, she says. “Pretty clear what’s up for grabs here”, said Venus. Sometimes I want to tell the reporters to use my quotes from the last time and just change the name of the tournament. It’s toughest on my parents.

The 21-year-old withdrew from her match against Italy’s Roberta Vinci, after slipping in the locker room and hitting her head. However, Serena has a disntinct advantage over her sister.

French Open victor Stan Wawrinka, meanwhile, sealed his quarter-final place with a a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Donald Young, who had knocked out Slovenia-born Briton Aljaz Bedene in round two of the competition.

That was the case in their most recent match, in the round of 16 at Wimbledon.

Venus, 35, may not be in the Top 10 rankings now, but she does have a Grand Slam legacy of several wins, along with her exceptional talent as a tennis player. She goes on to adf, “When I’m playing her I don’t think of her as my sister”. But that is easier said than done.

“I was a [jerk] a lot of the time, and I didn’t get a quarter of the criticism that she ever got. Hopefully things will go right”.

Venus Williams has admitted that no-one wants to be the “spoiler” as her sister Serena Williams attempts to complete the calendar Grand Slam at the US Open.

Serena is the one who is arguably the best player in the world.

World number one Serena, chasing the first calendar Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1988 with her seventh US Open title, could also capture her 22nd Grand Slam title to match Graf’s Open Era record.
