US Open: Nishikori fends off resilient Becker to advance

Nishikori, who earned Japan’s first Olympic tennis medal since 1920 a little more than two weeks ago, advanced in NY on Tuesday by beating Benjamin Becker 6-1, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. “I have great memories here and I always love coming back to NY”.

Look for Nishikori to win this match rather quickly.

But things then got complicated against the 96th-ranked Becker. He can be really aggressive. “He is always a risky player”.

Although Nishikori wasn’t happy with his serve, it was good enough for starters.

She completely collapsed in the second set, barely putting up a fight.

Williams has owned the number one spot since February 18, 2013 and will extend her streak to 186 consecutive weeks by the end of the US Open fortnight, tying the WTA record held by Steffi Graf. The Japanese won the match with a score-line of 6-1, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to progress to the next round.

Goffin reached his first major quarterfinal at this year’s French Open. He had lost in straight sets in his two previous Grand Slam matches, both at Flushing Meadows.

Murray has downplayed any grudge match aspect to his clash with Rosol, who provoked an angry outburst from the Briton when they met in the quarter-finals at Munich previous year.

Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium and Simona Halep of Romania have started play on Ashe, followed by Fernando Verdasco of Spain against Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland.

Verdasco has won three of their five encounters, including a straight-sets win in June on the grass courts at Queen’s Club.

The result marks Ivanovic’s fourth first round exit in her last eight grand slam appearances.

Kei Nishikori and Karen Khachanov meet in the second round of the 2016 US Open.

“I tried to go less for it because I tried to make less errors”, she said. I had four people traveling with me trying to make sure I’m on the right path and doing the right things.

Earlier, fifth seed Simona Halep blasted her way into the second round by demolishing Kirsten Flipkens 6-0 6-2 and underlining her credentials as a potential grand slam victor.

Halep needed less than an hour, but admitted she was “too nervous to finish the match” after failing to take advantage of her first chance to close it out when leading 6-0, 5-0.

Asked if she could retire, Ivanovic said: “No, not at all”.

“I had that set point, you know, and I went for my big forehand and it was quite a bad miss because I was a little bit in two minds what to do with it”, the Serbian player said.
