US Open: Serena can’t see finish line as another record tumbles

Serena will have a day off before tackling Simona Halep after the fifth-seeded Romanian’s 6-2, 7-5 victory over Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro.

She played on Arthur Ashe Stadium after Venus blew a match point against 10th-seeded Karolina Pliskova and ended up losing in a third-set tiebreaker.

‘I think it’s really exciting ´- Serena said in press conference – I just think winning 308 matches in general is pretty awesome. A seventh US Open title would break the professional era record for career grand slam titles that Williams now shares with Steffi Graf and leave her one behind all-time record holder Margaret Court. “I think it’s something that, you know, just really talks about the length of my career, in particular”, Williams said.

Serena said of her record, “It’s a huge number, I think it’s very significant actually”.

A seventh US Open title would take her past the record she shares with Chris Evert, and would also break the Open Era record she shares with Steffi Graf of 22 Grand Slam crowns.

She has reached the business end of the tournament without dropping a set or indeed even dropping her serve. “I definitely feel like I can play returns easier”. No tennis player in history has won so many matches in Majors.

“I had to run a lot and I tried to be more aggressive”, said No.5 seed Halep, who made the semi-finals a year ago – the Romanian’s best showing at the US Open. I’ve been playing for a really long time, but also, you know, given that consistency up there.

Wozniacki, a former world number one, is back in the last eight of a Slam for the first time since her second runner-up finish in NY in 2014. The second-seeded Murray overwhelmed Grigor Dimitrov 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the quarters of a Grand Slam for the 22nd time in his last 23 tries.
