US Open: Serena reveals ‘serious’ knee injury
There are, however, some key differences, including that the earlier one was at a run-of-the-mill event and the upcoming one is at a Grand Slam tournament. She is the first German since Steffi Graf to have the No. 1 ranking. “She deserved to win”.

Perhaps Wednesday’s exertions – she played a grueling encounter against Simona Halep – took a toll on Williams. This one goes pretty high on the list, too.
Pliskova, who has led the WTA Tour in aces the last two seasons, kept the 34-year-old American under pressure nearly from the start and had break chances on all but one of Serena’s service games in the first set and converted twice.
“I watched especially the last few points”, she said of Pliskova’s two-set triumph over Williams.
“Making the transfer to the match court, that was the challenge”.
And to think: Pliskova, 24, had never been past the third round in 17 previous appearances at majors.
Keber will head in as the favourite ahead of the match, priced at $1.53 with betting companies to get the win.
The 2016 U.S. Open women’s final features a player who will be the WTA Tour’s new world No. 1 against a first-time Grand Slam finalist.
Angelique Kerber is plotting revenge over her friend Karolina Pliskova to celebrate becoming world number one by winning her first US Open title on Saturday.
Pliskova said: “It was always a dream to get a title, get to the semi-final, get to the final”.
The top seed’s disappointment is doubled as she also surrenders the world number one ranking to Angelique Kerber.
“I mean, there is not more than to beat both sisters in one tournament in NY”, she said. That win gave made a huge difference in the semis against Serena. “I know what to change”.
– At 186 consecutive weeks, the American’s most recent stay at No.1 ties the Open Era record for most consecutive weeks at No.1 held by Graf. And Williams remains even with Chris Evert with six U.S. Open trophies.
Williams herself refused to take anything away from Pliskova, but admitted that her knee was a significant issue both physically and mentally. The 10th seeded Czech broke Williams in the fifth game, only for the top seed to immediately break back with a phenomenal game that kept Pliskova unable to score once off her own serve.
But watching Williams miss shot after shot – 31 unforced errors in all – one couldn’t help but wonder why.
“Yeah, I have been having some serious left knee problems”, said Williams.
“My mind was just a little bit everywhere, but it was what it was”, Williams said.
“When you’re hampered, you’re thinking of other things”. “Being a professional, if I am not able to recover, I am not going to make excuses”. I just wanted to win.
“She didn’t show up”. “I don’t talk about that whatsoever”, she said. “She was so slow”.
Williams was reluctant to discuss how long the injury might affect her and the rest of her schedule this year but was adamant she was not affected by fatigue. But Thursday, she looked the part of an up-and-comer with the strokes and demeanor to go far.
Either way, Pliskova surely contributed to Williams’ woes.

The 6-foot-1 Pliskova serves well, leading the tour in aces this season and averaging 109 miles per hour Thursday, and her angled offerings gave Williams fits.
