US Open: Wawrinka beats Nishikori to set up final against Djokovic

“I watch the finals here so many times – Roger, Novak, Rafa (Nadal) – they are wonderful champions and to be play against Novak, past year at the French, we play so many matches at a grand slam so to play him is something special”.

1 will now meet Stan Wawrinka, who rallied from an early deficit to defeat Kei Nishikori 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2, for the title clash.

Wawrinka was match point down against Britain’s Dan Evans in the third round in NY but a kind draw has allowed him to find his stride and he will be a risky opponent this weekend. But with Wawrinka saving six straight break points during one stretch in the second set, Nishikori’s legs started to go.

NEW YORK (AP) – Stan Wawrinka spent the first set of his U.S. Open semifinal letting Kei Nishikori push him around the court. “Just gets much better”. Djokovic is 19-4 against Wawrinka head to head, and their last meeting at a Grand Slam final was at Roland Garros 2015, where Wawrinka won in four sets.

The loss prevents Williams from earning her seventh championship at Flushing Meadows and 23rd major title overall, which would both have been Open-era records.

Nishikori started fast and furious, rolling through the first set in just 29 minutes, but the No. 6 seed wilted in the muggy conditions as third-seeded Wawrinka seemed to only grow stronger.

So freaky was Monfils’ behavior – at one point he stood halfway between the baseline and service line to receive Djokovic’s first serve – that many in the crowd began to boo him. He wiggled out of trouble and broke Nishikori in the next game, lacing a patented one-handed backhand that overpowered a net-rushing Nishikori to take a two sets to one lead.

Carreno Busta and Garcia-Lopez defeated the No. 8-seeded team of Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez, the French Open champs, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in an all-Spanish semifinal.

On to the second set, and the rusty Stan got broken in the very first game.

Wawrinka has won his last 10 finals and at 31 will try to become the oldest US Open champion since Ken Rosewall in 1970.

The victor will face No. 1 Novak Djokovic for the title on Sunday.

“I’m really happy”, Wawrinka said.

“There was only two more matches to go, so I felt really close and playing at a good level I think these two weeks”, Nishikori said about his goal of achieving a grand slam crown.

“I create clothes. I create, I don’t know, dance move”.

McEnroe was critical of the Frenchman’s performance, with the seven-time grand slam victor saying Monfils acted “unprofessional” at times. He appeared to be acting like he was not interested, and suddenly whip big shots. “What I got is my speed”. I had to wait and fight and make him a bit uncomfortable and he started to get exhausted.

He has needed treatment on his right arm during matches and in his semi-final twice sent for the trainer to massage his shoulders. Djokovic entered this match enjoying the easiest path to a major semifinal in the almost half-century of the Open era: Three of his first five foes either stopped playing or pulled out of the tournament entirely because of injuries. After one of the oddest tennis matches ever to be seen (Djokovic vs Monfils), a normal tennis game would’ve been money’s worth for most people who had stayed back to watch this late game.

Nishikori, who looked worn out, fell behind 3-1 in the third set but rallied to bring it back on serve at 4-3 and appeared to gain a respite when rain forced a delay to shut the roof. The 12-time major champion had triple set point while serving at 5-1, and Monfils was seemingly trying to give away the game. “But. when you play Novak, even playing your best tennis, you can also lose”.
