US PGA champion Jimmy Walker: ‘Final day was a battle’

Jason is a true champion.eagle on 18, that’s unreal. He gutted it out but struggled to make a charge up the leaderboard, failing to make a birdie until the 15th hole.

What did you make of the 2016 US PGA Championship?

LEFTY’S OUTLOOK: Phil Mickelson ended his run through the majors in good spirits.

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — One of the last people who would have predicted Jimmy Walker’s win in the PGA Championship at Baltusrol was the man himself.

“Certainly, the play this year at the British tells me that I’m able to play at a high level”, said Mickelson, who turned 46 in June and is starting to check out colleges for his oldest daughter, 17-year-old Amanda.

“The only thing I’m not comfortable with would be my short game”. “But he was swinging really well Tuesday and Wednesday – some of the best I’ve seen him swing, hitting it really close on every hole – so he kind of figured something out and rolled with it this week”. He tied for fourth in the PGA Championship past year.

South African Branden Grace produced an excellent round of 67 to finish on nine-under par and remain in the running of the leaders slipped up. Walker joins Masters champ Danny Willet, U.S. Open victor Dustin Johnson and British Open champion Henrik Stenson. Call that a case of bad timing.

A week that brought over four inches of rain over the 98th PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey went down a 36-hole marathon on Sunday in Lift, Clean and Place conditions.

“If it hangs in the top 10 it certainly pushes me up in the FedEx Cup play-offs, which will be nice to know my schedule”. I remember when I left (Gleneagles) I did an interview and said I never want to miss another one again. But he kept his cool and kept hitting the right shots at the right time and, most significantly, got the breaks – luck, if you like – when he needed them. He has never been a captain’s pick.

But what boggles my mind even more is the incredible knack of the PGA to produce only-time major winners.

‘Dustin, I mean, he’s a great player.

“Despite that, I thought I was hanging good”.

“There’s a lot of emotion going on out there”.

“I was standing out there on the fairway and Andy [Sanders, caddie] and I both said, “let’s go for it””.

Nicklaus changed his mind, however, during the opening of The Golden Bear Grill last week in the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

A par was still good enough for Walker to become the eighth wire-to-wire victor of the US PGA – and the first since Phil Mickelson at the same venue in 2005 – and the 37-year-old held his nerve after pitching to 30 feet from the right of the green.

Walker gave him the $1,200 bottle four years ago when Harmon refused payment for their first of many lessons. “They aren’t about growing golf right now”. “We Are 13” refers to American golf fans across the country who will support the team like the 13th contestant on the 12-player squad. “Then to hit a wood up on the green like that and nearly make a putt, that was pretty fantastic”. Instead of the four seconds, I would have liked to have five majors. And given that the alleged “Big Three” were poised to dominate 2016, it’s provided a fascinating and unpredictable twist.

Rahm is playing the Travelers Championship this week, and he is likely to finish the equivalent of top 125 on the money list to earn a full PGA Tour card. They were maroon with old photos of previous winning USA teams, though that was hard to see from a distance.

“Sometimes pars are hard but we got it”, Walker said before lifting the gleaming silver Wanamaker Trophy. “So I’ve got two”.

The circumstances surrounding the weather and the way the final two rounds unfolded also did not help Day.

The gamble paid off as the storms held up and the championship was settled. The exception was Willie Anderson of Scotland in the 1903 U.S. Open.

But on Sunday at the PGA Championship, Day wanted nothing more than to play side-by-side with Walker in the final round at Baltusrol Golf Club.

Jordan Spieth, last year’s sensation on tour with two major wins and Player of the Year honors, was blanked in the big tournaments this season.

STAT OF THE WEEK: Steve Stricker has made 23 consecutive cuts in the majors he has played since turning 43. He’s seventh in the world rankings and, like Watson, is one of the sport’s shining personalities.
