A Republican from Utah has officially entered the race to become Speaker of the House.
Outside experts wonder if the change in speaker will really mean much for the ongoing fights between defense supporters and fiscal hawks.
Even the unprecedented development that McCarthy’s ascension will put Californians in the House’s top two party positions is less than it seems for the Golden State.
A constant focus of conservatives’ complaints, Boehner was facing the threat of a floor vote on whether he could stay on as speaker, a formal challenge that hasn’t happened in over 100 years.
In addition to Chaffetz and McCarthy, Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Fla., is also running for speaker. On the issues, Kevin has gotten results where others have failed. The full House is expected to vote later this month. If the GOP is fractured, there would be multiple votes on the floor.

The Utah congressman says the Republicans have the majority but they haven’t, so far, been able to lead because of the fractured caucus.

We follow the same standards for taste as the daily newspaper. Nor is it clear that the House GOP’s hard-line faction will embrace him, especially because of an episode where he briefly revoked a subcommittee chairman’s gavel to try to enforce obedience to leadership.
Democrats say they are cautiously optimistic that Chaffetz will be a better chairman than Issa.
