Ten U.S. sailors and two patrol boats detained by Iran on January 12 and accused of trespassing have been released after Tehran determined they did not deliberately enter Iranian waters.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said in a statement Wednesday that the sailors had been released back into global waters following a us apology and clarifications that any incursion was “a mistake”.

Ten U.S. sailors detained by Iran were released early Wednesday, officials said. Iran had originally told the United States that the sailors would be returned “promptly”, but ended up detaining them overnight.

He said the sailors were transferred to Farsi island, near where they had been seized.

The Pentagon said the US Navy was investigating how the sailors came to be in Iranian waters.

This was just the latest reported incident between USA and Iranian forces in the Gulf in recent weeks.

Officials said a radio signal from one of the boats showed that they were on Farsi Island, setting off efforts to contact the Iranians.

“This process is underway now and will not last long”.

And Rep. Duncan Hunter expressed concern Iran was going to copy the USA boat design, as well as benefit from the equipment on the craft.

The Financial Times reports on the incident, including how it could affect the imposition of new sanctions against Iran.

Tuesday’s incident occurred as the boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain, when the Pentagon momentarily lost contract with the crew.

USA officials also blamed mechanical trouble for the incident.

State television had quoted Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, head of the guard corps naval operations, saying that the USA boats’ entry into Iranian waters “was the result of faults in navigation systems and the issue is getting resolved”.

“We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly”.

President Obama did not mention the hostage situation in his State of the Union address. The Iranian was Kerry’s main interlocutor in talks that led to last year’s nuclear deal between Iran and major powers.

The nine men and one woman were held on Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf after being detained nearby on Tuesday. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the sensitive incident publicly.

“No nation attacks us directly or our allies because they know that’s the path to ruin”, Obama told Congress in an awkward passage as the 10 USA sailors remained in Iranian custody. The Revolutionary Guard is part of Iran’s conservative ruling class, and it opposed the nuclear deal the civilian government negotiated.
