“Time and again, human beings have believed that they finally arrived at a period of enlightenment only to repeat, then, cycles of conflict and suffering”, Obama said.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who also gave his final address to the UN General Assembly, said it was up to the world to show “strong leadership, and in particular, compassion”.
President Obama used his final address to the United Nations General Assembly to make a spirited argument for worldwide cooperation, while also delivering a stern warning about the countervailing forces of nationalism and tribal identity that have been gaining momentum in both the US and Europe. Security in Manhattan, already high in light of the United Nations summit, was further tightened.
Mr Obama, in his final speech to the UN General Assembly, acknowledged that the extremist and sectarian violence wreaking havoc in the Middle East and elsewhere “will not be quickly reversed”.
About 21 million refugees have been forced to flee their countries due to conflict or persecution, the United Nations says.

After Brazil’s President Michel Temer finished his address, president of the General Assembly Peter Thomson said Obama is delayed and has not yet arrived for his speech to the General Assembly.
