US Sen. Patty Murray elected Assistant Democratic Leader

“When you lose an election like his”, New York Senator Chuck Schumer said this morning, “you can’t flinch, you can’t ignore it, you need to look it right in the eye and ask why, analyze it, and learn from it”.

He said West Virginians were so angry they were willing to overlook “offensive rhetoric” from Donald Trump, adding: “If that’s not a wake-up call I really don’t know what is”. Some officials have suggested the party needs new leadership to better resonate with Middle America, instead of re-electing the California Democrat and career politician.

The New York senator will be joined by Senator Dick Durbin of IL, who was re-elected as the minority whip, the party’s number two position in the Senate, ABC News reported.

Democratic U.S. senators elected Chuck Schumer as minority leader for the new Congress on Wednesday, and he tapped former presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders for a junior leadership role.

“That no one has seemed to notice that we are about to elect the first Jewish leader of the Senate is proof of how much ground has been won in the centuries of the American war against anti-Semitism”, O’Donnell said in a segment contrasting Schumer’s upbringing to that of fellow New Yorker Donald Trump.

McConnell and Schumer were elected unanimously at separate closed-door meetings.

Schumer will succeed Nevada Sen.

Republicans will control the White House, the House and Senate. Cory Gardner of Colorado, who became the new chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the campaign wing of the Senate GOP conference.

Once Republicans had secured their hold on the Senate, there was little doubt McConnell would win another term as Majority Leader and he was chosen unanimously. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., for the party’s presidential nomination.

Schumer, of Brooklyn, and Trump, a Queens native, have a long history dating back to the billionaire real estate developer’s days as a major donor to the Democratic Party.

On Wednesday, McConnell wisely said that Republicans should be humble about their mandate because overreaching after an election is “generally a mistake”. Their selections of Sen. Their selections of Schumer, from NY, and McConnell are expected to produce little drama. Mitch McConnell, who lacks Mr. Schumer’s instinct for soundbites but has been a brutally effective legislative tactician. Most of each party’s leaders will remain in their posts next year, an ironic stability following an election that seemed to show a demand by voters for change.
