US Senate to Debate Trump-Style GOP Immigration Bill

Senators voted 97-1 on ending debate over whether or not to take up the House-passed bill being used as a vehicle for the Senate’s debate. “McConnell, he has said publicly and privately in ways that I believe that we are now going to have an honest debate”, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin told Politico.

But the Grassley bill likely doesn’t have the backing of 60 votes or even 50, with Republicans like Arizona Sen.

But it’s still unclear whether Trump will support a bill that makes it through both chambers of Congress. “We’re going to get the wall”, Trump said at the White House last week.

Democrats eventually relented, agreeing to a spending bill in exchange for assurances by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) that he would bring up immigration reform for a vote prior to DACA’s formal expiration date on March 5.

Led by Chuck Grassley, GOP senators are preparing a comprehensive immigration bill – as called for by President Trump.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the president has “spelled out a fair and generous framework that will be necessary to earn his signature”.

“If the Democrats want to make a deal, it’s really up to them”, says President Trump.

“Their protection should not be contingent on dramatic changes to our immigration system”, Bennet said. We’re trying to do that. “There is no reason why we should not reach a bipartisan solution this week”, McConnell said Tuesday morning.

Schumer resisted McConnell’s pressure to pass the broader Trump bill.

Democrats don’t have a lot of leverage in a deal on dreamers, so it’s uncertain where that debate goes in the coming weeks.

The issue at hand is the fate of Dreamers, the several million individuals who were brought to the USA illegally as children. “You never want to have a break right in the middle of a debate”.

“To anyone who doubts my intention to solve this problem and bring up a DACA and immigration reform bill, do not”, Ryan said.

Durbin says Chloe Kim showed an interest in snowboarding as a young girl, developing into one of the best in the world and capturing a gold medal for the U.S.in the halfpipe Tuesday. The plan carries a significant political risk that none of the ideas will have enough votes to pass, leaving Congress unable to fulfill its pledge to protect the roughly 700,000 people enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

“Negotiations on DACA have begun”.

The president puts the onus on Democrats but differences among Republicans could also pose challenges and Senate rules will require bipartisan support to get an immigration overhaul approved. A federal judge ruled that current beneficiaries could renew their applications for one final two-year renewal, but the uncertainty of a White House challenge has made permanent legislation into a much more urgent legislative request.
