A statement released by Nelson’s office said the doctor found the cancer early on in a routine check-up.

Nelson says that the surgery will be performed in a hospital in Florida, and that the diagnosis and surgery will not impact his re-election bid in 2018. “Extensive scans showed no signs of the cancer spreading outside the prostate”, it said.

The Democrat from Florida now has no symptoms, according to Nelson’s press secretary.

Nelson is in his third term in the Senate.

Prostate cancer, the second most common type in men after skin cancer, typically grows slowly, according to the National Cancer Institute. The organization estimates that about 220,800 new cases will be diagnosed in the US this year, and about 27,540 men will die from the disease.
