US states shun Syria refugees in wake of Paris attacks

The Chairman of the House Homeland Security committee Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) sent a letter to President Barack Obama on Monday calling on him to temporarily stop Syrian refugees from coming into the United States.

Snyder said the attacks in Paris and Beirut, Lebanon, led to his decision to hold efforts to accept refugees until the U.S. Department of Homeland Security completes a review of security clearances and procedures.

Republican leaders of the Wisconsin state Assembly say they don’t want Syrian refugees in the state.

Authorities have said a Syrian passport was found near one of the attackers, and the Paris prosecutors’ office says fingerprints from the attacker match those of someone who passed through Greece in October. “We can help them deal with their refugee status, but the first obligation of the President needs to be as commander in chief to protect the safety of the United States of America”. Hutchinson said the US becoming a permanent place for refugees’ relocation is not the appropriate strategy and may pose a risk to Arkansans.

“When I hear a political leader suggesting that there should be a religious test for which a person who is fleeing from a war torn country is admitted… when a few of those folks themselves come from families who benefited from protection when they were fleeing political persecution, that is shameful”, the President said.

Abbott, who appeared on “The Laura Ingraham Show”, said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is well aware that “people from Syria, people from other countries of interest, are crossing our border to a large extent”.

In a letter to Obama, the Republican also urged scrapping federal plans to accept more Syrian refugees into the country as a whole.

“With respect to refugees, the governor and his public safety team are in constant communication with federal authorities about all refugee resettlements, including those involving refugees from Syria”, McAuliffe spokesman Brian Coy said in a written statement.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley also rejected the possibility of allowing Syrian refugees into his state, and connected refugees with potential terror threats.

“If you listen to what ISIS has said, we are just as big a target as the Europeans”, Branstad says.

The Democrat said Monday that the federal government thinks it can handle an additional 10,000 refugees that the White House said in September that it would accept from Syria.

New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan is the only Democrat to oppose Syrian refugees’ resettlement in the United States – a stance that’s particularly notable since she is challenging Republican Sen.

A few interpret Friday’s attacks as evidence that refugees are unsafe, Riemer said, but he disagrees with that interpretation.

“I reserve the right to change my mind”, he said. This plan has met disagreement among members of Congress, who cite concerns over national security.

Jindal has already signed a state executive order barring the resettlement of Syrian refugees there.

“It is irresponsible and severely disconcerting to place individuals, who may have ties to ISIS, in a state without the state’s knowledge or involvement”, Jindal said in his letter Saturday. Ayotte says no refugees should be allowed into the country until the government can “100 percent guarantee” they are not affiliated with the Islamic State.
