According to diplomatic sources, India was under intense worldwide pressure following Pakistan’s strong stance at the United Nations and submission of three dossiers comprising proofs of Indian involvement in subversive activities in Karachi and Balochistan. “I hope and pray the extra mile Modi has walked gets the needed response from Pakistan so that the future of our children is secured”, Professor Muzaffar Ahmad, 55, said.
Modi phoned Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif while on a visit to neighbouring Afghanistan and asked if he could make a stop in Pakistan on his way home, Pakistani foreign secretary Aizaz Chaudhry told media after Modi departed. The visit coincides with Mr Sharif’s birthday and the wedding of his granddaughter. Modi spent some 90 minutes at the ancestral residence of Sharif at Raiwind, about 40 km from Lahore.
They held talks and made a decision to open ways for peace for the “larger good” of the people of the two countries.
Zee news reported that Modi was warmly welcomed by Sharif’s family and that Modi touched the feet of the prime minister’s mother, a huge sign of respect.
Later, the External Affairs Minister visited Pakistan to attend Heart of Asia Conference.
“But yes, it’s a clear signal that active engagement can be done at a quick pace”, the aide said, declining to be identified. Pakistan accuses India of using spies in Afghanistan to help foment insurgency in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan border province.
The other Indian prime ministers who have visited Pakistan are Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Jang newspaper said.
After a months of impasse, the situation between both the countries India and Pakistan seems like thaw.
Foreign Office (FO) stated that Modi’s visit was not scheduled however, he would visit Pakistan today.
“I think it is going to play a significant role in improving ties between the two South Asian archrivals”, said Amanullah Memon, a professor of worldwide relations at a private university in the capital, Islamabad.
A nightly news anchor said he had received messages from intelligence officials expressing pessimism toward Modi’s visit while pro-army Twitter accounts that observers believe are run by the military also voiced negative opinions. High-level talks were twice called off and violence has flared along the countries’ disputed, heavily militarized border.
Questioning his visit, Congress leader Manish Tewari pondered if Modi had other interests behind his surprise visit.
Opening the parliament building in Kabul, Modi pledged India’s support for the Afghan government and urged regional powers, including Pakistan, to work together to foster peace.
