US United Continental flights grounded after computer glitch

Because of the glitch, the passengers were asked to change their flight plan and look for an alternate route.

A White House spokesman said President Barack Obama was briefed on the glitch and that it appeared unrelated to an outage hours later at the New York Stock Exchange. United cited “network connectivity” for the problems. “We hope our flight was delayed because we have a long time to wait”.

Wednesday’s delay began at 08:26 and initially applied to all flights operated by United and its subcontractors.

“We had one delay this morning, but it was not due to the computer issue”, he said.

This is the second time in two months United has been forced to ground flights over technical issues.

“United is not the major carrier here at Detroit Metro”, Conway said.

United also struggled through a series of computer outages in 2012 after switching to the passenger-information system of Continental Airlines, which merged with United.

The router malfunction affected computers at Chicago-based United including the Shares reservation system, said spokeswoman Megan McCarthy.

An industry analyst said the grounding will frustrate Air Canada (TSX:AC) passengers travelling on codeshare with United, but have little lasting impact on United or its Canadian partner.

We reached out to Monroe Regional Airport to see if any flights would be delayed coming in or out.

Two inbound flights that already landed at LAX were also affected because outbound aircraft were still at gates, according to Mary Grady of Los Angeles World Airports. A number of high-paying business travellers defected to other airlines and revenue dropped. Three of those flights were 40 minutes to an hour behind schedule.

“An issue with a router degraded network connectivity for various applications, causing this morning’s operational disruption”, an airline spokesperson said in a statement emailed to SCMagazine.com. The Experts said that the day’s event could account to maximum cost for united airlines which have worked to regain its footing and worked out most problems in merging with Continental Airlines.
