US urges engagement, calm after Saudi Arabia cuts Iran ties
Saudi Arabia, which put the cleric to death Saturday in a mass execution of 47 men accused of terrorism-related offenses, fired back, saying Iran had “revealed its true face represented in support for terrorism”.

THIRD: All countries with which the Kingdom shares relations have been briefed on the hostile statements issued by the Iranian government, a provocation triggering the breaching of sanctity of the Saudi embassy in Tehran and the consulate general in Mashhad.
Greg Barton, Professor of Global Islamic Politics at Deakin University, told 3AW Mornings that Saudi Arabia must be careful as they continue to make enemies.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been outspoken about al-Nimr’s execution, tweeting Sunday that “Divine revenge will seize Saudi politicians” for the “unfairly spilled blood of oppressed martyr #SheikhNimr”.
Iran plans to raise output by half a million to 1 million barrels per day (bpd) post sanctions, although Iranian officials said they did not plan to flood the market with its crude if there was no demand for it.
Nimr became a leader in Shi’ite protests in Saudi Arabia that were inspired by the Arab Spring uprisings in the region.
“We believe that diplomatic engagement and direct conversations remain essential in working through differences”, State Department spokesman John Kirby said on Sunday.
Speaking on Iranian state television, Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in Tehran’s first response that by cutting diplomatic ties, Riyadh could not cover up “its major mistake of executing Sheikh Nimr”.
Ms Bishop also condemned protest attacks on the Saudi embassy in Tehran, after demonstrators stormed and set fire to it following the executions.
Meanwhile, al-Nimr’s family prepared for three days of mourning at a mosque in al-Awamiya village in the kingdom’s al-Qatif region in predominantly Shiite eastern Saudi Arabia. Last month, Saudi Arabia convened a meeting of Syrian opposition figures in hopes of creating a delegation to attend peace talks with the Syrian government this month. While the kingdom says 769 pilgrims are killed, an Associated Press count shows over 2,400 people were killed.
In Tehran, crowds were reportedly heard shouting “Death to the Al Saud family”, the monarchy that rules Saudi Arabia.
In addition, says Matthiesen, “about 20 younger Shia are still on death row in Saudi, and I would assume that Shia leaders would rather have them released than start a massive protest campaign now”. Moqtada al-Sadr, an Iraqi Shi’ite cleric, called for angry protests.
Although Saudi Arabia and the United States have long found common cause in antiterrorism campaigns and in promoting regional stability, strains have emerged regularly since the September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda attacks.
But Ben Rich, researcher of Saudi politics at the University of New England, said Australia would likely keep turning a blind eye to Saudi Arabia’s human rights record.
Thousands Of Karachi people in a protesting rally organized by Majlis-e-Wehdatul Muslimeen (MWM) Karachi chapter on Sunday condemned the unjust execution of Saudi Human Right Activist Sheikh Baqir Al-Nimr b by tyrant Saudi regime.

The executions came as a surprise to many in Saudi, but the Saudi leadership was well aware of likely turbulent reactions.
