US vs. Canada brings out emotion in Jonathan Toews

The format for the World Cup is as follows. It was perhaps wise of Babcock to sit Crosby out for Saturday’s round in Ottawa and not risk anything.

Though it may be hard to replicate the overall Olympic environment, it doesn’t mean the World Cup is without merit. Some great players on the ice.

Those who didn’t ditch, anyway. Krueger wants his players to be proud of their birthplace. If his players choose to exercise their constitutional rights by sitting for the anthem, he has no problem exercising his right as a coach to bench them throughout the game. Some may even be injured. The prospect of all that hope joined together makes North America a team to watch at the World Cup. While this policy was part of what made the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” so memorable, it also led to a string of Soviet gold medals through the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. There would be lawsuits, acrimony, etc., and it could drive prominent Europeans to the Russia-based Kontinental Hockey League. The first official games get underway on September 17. It’s a home game for Canada.

Pacioretty’s hard-working publicists in the media can’t quite hide the fact that his team needs more from him than it will ever get, but the captain is fragile and thin-skinned.

This tournament can trace its roots back to the Canada Cups of the 1970s.

There’s certainly no love lost between these two teams, as many of these players have faced each other in previous worldwide tournaments. It makes me someone who doesn’t appreciate a hack coach implementing a hack style. Eight teams will compete for the title of “World Champions” including the United States and Canada, one of the sport’s fiercest worldwide rivalries.

Oh, and remember how I said that Team Canada would be looking to get revenge on a Team USA, specifically Ryan Kesler, for that late hit on Weber? The American team clearly targeted Crosby, and his frustration was evident.

That’s vintage Tortorella. It’s a preseason tournament.

The US are due to entertain Canada in their first of three pre-tournament games today. He’s bringing a billy club to a fencing match.

The U.S. has one exhibition game left, on Tuesday against Finland, before traveling to Toronto for the World Cup.

“We’ve got some work to do”, Tortorella said after practice Monday. “To be able to sell the game that way, to be as Team USA not just as a hockey team but as a larger congregation at the Winter Olympics, is something special”. As he tweeted, “Wouldn’t benching a black man for taking a stance only further prove [Colin Kaepernick’s] point of oppression?”

Before Saturday’s game, Team USA head coach John Tortorella was concerned his team was sloppy in the win Friday night – Canada outshoot the US 43-25 in that game – and wanted to see a more cohesive effort this time around.

The tournament features the standard “Big Six” national teams of Canada, USA, Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden and Finland as well as two All-Star teams: Team Europe and the top players from North America 23 years old or younger.

The North Americans include four Pittsburgh-area players: John Gibson, J.T. Miller, Brandon Saad and Vince Trocheck. It was a thumping affair, too, fast-paced, exciting and as chippy as Team USA wanted it to be.

Sew a flag. Write an anthem.

Aaron Ekblad of the Florida Panthers and Johnny Gaudreau of the Calgary Flames also scored twice each for North America, which got one goal from Morgan Rielly of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Obviously, the US brain trust is not drawing inspiration from Lao Tzu, Ghandi or even Herb Brooks. Probably the same thing I do.
