The State Department on Tuesday warned Americans traveling to Europe about risk of terror attacks over the summer.

“Euro Cup stadiums, fan zones, and unaffiliated entertainment venues broadcasting the tournaments in France and across Europe represent potential targets for terrorists, as do other large-scale sporting events and public gathering places throughout Europe”, the department said.

It also suggested Americans should be prepared for additional security and should stay in touch with family and “ensure they know how to reach you in the event of an emergency”.

One hundred and 30 people were killed in November following a series of co-ordinated militant attacks in Paris.

Travel advisories are routinely issued but the State Department, in the same way the Foreign Office will on occasion issue travel warnings for Britons going overseas.

The warning also cites the Tour de France cycle race and the Catholic Church’s Youth Day in Krakow, Poland, which is expected to draw up to 2.5 million visitors. It recently admonished United States citizens to avoid travel under any circumstances to North Korea.

“France will host the European Soccer Championship from June 10-July 10”, it said. The final teams after the quaifiers include – France, Spain, Germany, England, Portugal, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Croatia, Austria, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Sweden, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, Republic of Ireland, Iceland, Wales, Albania and Northern Ireland.
