USA beats Italy, second straight Olympic gold in women’s water polo

The team’s recent record, including a winning streak of at least 22 games, has rarely been matched in the history of the sport, which only added women’s play to the Olympics in 2000.

Italy, which last won women’s water polo gold in 2004, defeated Russian Federation, 12-9, to advance to the championship game.

Much of the highly physical action takes place beneath the pool surface, a reason why the game does not typically lure millions of prime-time viewers. Musselman was selected to the tournament’s all-star team in a vote by reporters covering the tournament.

Arianna Garibotti and Roberta Bianconi have been the big names for Italy during the knockout rounds.

Snyder is the second straight American wrestler to win Olympic gold in his weight class.

Their dominance is more remarkable considering 9 of the 13 Team USA players were competing in their first Games, and the average age of players on the team is 23. Adam Krikorian left the team the next day to return to California, but came back to Rio on August 8 before the competition began. “Every player, every athlete, every coach that arrive in Olympic Games want to arrive to this dream”.

Steffens, the team captain, was selected as the MVP of the Olympic Games, a honor she also received in 2012.

Winner, winner, Team USA has done it again! I think I need to figure that out.

So close: Laura Zeng, the only competitor in rhythmic gymnastics individuals from the United States, was hundredths of a point from moving on to the finals and finished in 11th place. “So I for sure would love to be back in this situation in four years”.

“I was just thinking about my brother, thinking about how hard this journey has been”, Krikorian recalled of that moment.

“It was hitting me pretty hard but these girls have worked so hard for four years and some have worked their entire lives for this moment”. Lee’s reaction at the end – falling to his knees, covering his face with his hands and putting his forehead on the court before leaping and pumping his fists – made it seem more like a gold-medal contest than the semifinals.

“Yesterday was a special day for all of us”, Krikorian said, “because it was my brother’s birthday”.

“The relationships I have with this team means more to me than any medal”, Krikorian said. Krikorian’s wife, Anicia Mendez, surprised him by flying in from Southern California for the championship game. “Now, I think we can just enjoy the game”. Lydia Ko, the world No. 1, made the first hole-in-one of her career as she raced into contention.

On the make-up of the team with “kids” and veterans: “These are strong, inspiring women”. Definitely not kids. They may have come in similar to how I was last squad as just a little pup trying to learn and soak in all the advice and experience from the older girls.

In turn, Krikorian’s players gave him as viciously attractive a performance as you will see in any swimming pool on any continent.

They were forced to watch the game live-stream over the internet from a small tablet computer as the NBC broadcast kept toggling back to Olympic basketball.
