USA election: Clinton releases tax return, blasts Trump for not doing so

The Donald Trump presidential campaign, which has lagged behind Hillary Clinton’s ground game in OH, is opening 15 regional “victory offices” across the state.

“Here’s a pretty incredible fact: There is a non-zero chance that Donald Trump isn’t paying (asterisk) any (asterisk) taxes”, Clinton tweeted, just minutes after releasing her own returns.

Mrs Clinton and her husband Bill, the former president, reported $10.6 million (AU$13.9 million) in income for 2015, and paid $3.6 million (AU$4.7 million) in federal income tax.

[They] paid an effective federal tax rate of 34.2 percent and an effective combined tax rate of 43.2 percent, and gave 9.8 percent of their adjusted gross income to charity, according to a campaign release. It will take some time for reporters and other interested parties to dig through them, but the most important thing right now is that Clinton and Kaine are giving everyone the chance to do so.

Trump’s critics have speculated that the real estate tycoon is hiding his tax returns because they may reveal that he has vastly overstated his personal wealth, has unsavory business ties with the Russians, or may be stingy with charitable donations – or some combination thereof.

Hillary Clinton made $28,296 in royalties from her book published, Simon & Schuster-as well as $3,000,000 from the publisher, presumably the last payment of her advance for her last book, Hard Choices, which came out in paperback a year ago.

The Republican and Democratic candidates in the last nine presidential elections – since Ronald Reagan in 1980 – have released tax returns at least for the previous year, according to Politifact.

Why is @realDonaldTrump refusing to release his tax returns? Tim Kaine of Virginia, and his wife, Anne Holton. Almost 96 percent of the Clintons’ $1.04 million in charitable contributions went to their own Clinton Foundation. In a statement accompanying the release, Clinton spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri noted that this release stands “in stark contrast” to Trump’s refusal to release his tax filings, as has been standard procedure for decades.

Trump turned a deaf ear to calls from his critics for his tax returns at a campaign rally Friday in Pennsylvania, a key swing state where he is behind Clinton in the polls.

Clinton and former president Bill Clinton have made their tax returns public every year dating back to 1977.
