USA election: Clinton set to return to campaign trail

Clinton’s health-info-3761/”>pneumonia diagnosis came at inopportune time for the candidate, who spent the bulk of August fundraising in wealthy USA enclaves such as the Hamptons and Martha’s Vineyard, with only intermittent campaign events.

Younger voters, a problem for Clinton since the start of her campaign, are a particular target of the message now, less than two months from Election Day.

Earlier Thursday, Clinton steered wide discussing criticism leveled at her by former secretary of state Colin Powell in leaked emails published Wednesday.

Mrs Clinton, 68, almost collapsed at a Sept 11 memorial ceremony in NY on Sunday.

In Greensboro, Clinton will deliver a speech on the topic of “how we lift up our children and families”, according to Clinton spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri. “Welcome back to ‘Stronger Together!’ ” Clinton said with a broad smile. And, of course, Clinton’s campaign has released a lot of health information in the last couple of days in an attempt to put questions about her health to rest.

Mr Trump’s team appeared to take a swipe at Mrs Clinton’s brief absence from the campaign trail in a statement accompanying the new health information.

Clinton said she will “never be the showman my opponent is, and that’s OK with me”. “I don’t know”, Trump mused.

MCEVERS: So did Hillary Clinton talk about her recent illness? She later apologized for saying that the number was “half”, but she did not back away from her characterization of Trump’s candidacy.

“Why in the world did Hillary Clinton lie to everyone and hide such an important fact for two days, saying she was overheated and dehydrated and then, of course, hours and hours later after, unfortunately, her health became the biggest trending story of the day, not the 9/11 fallen, why wait all those hours?”

“People like me, we’re lucky”.

President Barack Obama won North Carolina’s 15 electoral votes in 2008, but lost the state to Republican Mitt Romney in 2012.

But Mrs Clinton returns to polling figures that show Mr Trump holding a narrow lead in key battleground states OH and Florida.

Democratic pollster Geoff Garin said North Carolina is Clinton’s “best chance” to win a state that Mitt Romney carried four years ago.

Clinton’s return to the campaign trail comes as polls show the race tightening both nationally and in key battleground states. The country – and a Clinton campaign that remains self-assured for now – will find out in. And by the time she visits on Thursday, Clinton’s Tar Heel State operation will have 33 organizing offices in the state.

Another poll by Free Press/WXYZ-TV showed that Trump has sliced into Clinton’s share of voters in deep blue MI, which hasn’t voted Republican since 1988.

While Trump was shown to be slightly overweight, his doctor Harold Bornstein declared the Republican nominee to be “in excellent physical health”.

She is still leading Trump at 38 to 35 per cent – but the poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points so the true result could be far closer.

She was self-deprecating about her public image, admitting as she has several times before she is hardly the master campaigner her husband, Bill Clinton is.

“When I’m under the weather I can afford to take a few days off, millions of Americans can’t, they either go to work sick or they lose a paycheck don’t they”.

He added: “I want that to continue in the future and I hope the American people will vote in a way that reflects the urgency of these issues”.
