USA embassy warns of possible threats in Beijing
Canada joins four other Western nations, including the United States, Britain, and France that have said they received information about possible threats against Westerners in Sanlitun, a popular shopping district in the Chinese capital, during the Christmas holidays.

The British Embassy also issued a similar warning to its citizens in the Chinese capital. The UK Embassy has issued the same guidance to British Government Staff.
There are no further details from governmental agencies about the nature of the threat.
“Yang Shu, a counter-terror expert at Lanzhou University in northwest China, said that the threat’s high profile and focus on Westerners could mark a first for Beijing”.
Armed police were standing on guard in the area, which has many big-name brand stores and some embassies. In August, a lone attacker fatally stabbed a Chinese woman there and injured a French man in the stabbing as well.
Beijing police released a statement that their alert for shopping malls and supermarkets was “to safeguard security and social order during the Christmas period”.
On Thursday afternoon, Sanlitun was swarming with camouflage-clad guards toting large black rifles. Authorities have placed roadblocks in at least one of the city’s embassy districts.
Beijing described the incident as a terrorist attack.

Beijing is generally safe and criminals rarely target travellers, although the fashionable Sanlitun bar and restaurant district occasionally sees fights. “Outside of Xinjiang you should be vigilant when transiting public transport hubs, which have been the subject of recent attacks”.
