Biles, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian and Laurie Hernandez – claimed gold by a margin of over eight points on Russian Federation with China winning bronze in the Rio Olympic Arena.

Marta Karolyi, U.S. gymnastics team coordinator, looks at the scoreboard along with, from right, Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and Gabrielle Douglas during the artistic gymnastics women’s qualification at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2016.

The top eight teams in qualifying move on to Tuesday’s team final, where the U.S.is expected to repeat the gold it won easily in London.

Sunday is your chance to see Biles in the Olympic arena for the first time.

Entering the balance beam, the Americans’ final event, Raisman held a 0.476-point lead on Douglas, which effectively meant that their performance on beam would determine who would join Biles in the all-around final.

The Americans came into the night hopeful after qualifying second to China.

Two days after posting the second-best qualifying score at the loud, boisterous Rio Olympic Arena, the United States started slowly and closed quickly before finishing fifth for the second straight Olympics.

It would have been easy to do it, but Gabby Douglas didn’t blame the two-per-country rule that will keep her from defending her Olympic all-around gold. She took time off after her triumph in London and put together a sometimes rocky comeback in which she switched coaches three times.

“I’m throwing out things because we want to get better”.

The US women’s gymnasts delivered an astounding team score to vault them nearly out of reach of the competition in their quest for gold on the first day of preliminaries at the Rio Olympic Arena. Russia is running a close second with 46.166 – a figure to keep in mind on the US uneven bars rotation, which the Russian team just left.

The rule came about to prevent one country’s gymnasts from dominating the Olympic podium, as Romania’s women had at the Sydney Games in 2000, where they won gold, silver and bronze medals in the all around event.

To her great credit, Douglas handled her disappointment with consummate grace. If she advances, the final will be at 8 p.m. CT.

The self-administered moniker is a nod to 2012’s “Fierce Five”, which included Raisman and Douglas, and to 2020’s team, which will be only four athletes due to a rules change. On the men’s side, Phil Dalhausser returns to Olympic sand with his partner from the past, Nick Lucena. Now the pair are taking their first bows at the Olympics, hoping to make a big impact and escape the shadow of the top American beach volleyball team of Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross. Still, Massialas, 22, is the first individual Olympic medalist the USA has produced in men’s fencing since Peter Westbrook won a bronze in 1984. “It’s still good. Third in the world is still pretty solid”.

The sport of diving is a matter of centimeters – it’s incredibly hard to pull off a ideal dive.

Shi Tingmao and Wu totaled 345.60 points to win the women’s 3-meter synchronized title.

Al Trautwig, NBC’s gymnastics announcer at the Rio Games, apologized Monday for suggesting that Simone Biles’ parents through adoption are not really her parents.
