USA men, though far from flawless, qualify for team gymnastics final

The Americans have won 41 consecutive Olympic contests while the African nation is looking for its first victory.

The Brazilian women play South Africa at 11 p.m. and the host nation’s fans have become enamored of their team as the men disappoint.

A full day of men’s individual foil competition culminates with medal matches that start at 5:15 p.m., with the gold medal bout at 5:45 p.m.

Men’s and women’s beach volleyball preliminaries run through the day after opening rounds Saturday.

The United States men face Canada at 5:05 p.m. and defending champion Russian Federation follows against Cuba at 8:30 p.m. before the Iranian men make their Olympic debut. Women in Iran complained they could not attend games in their country.
